Diane Carlson

Sculptress

Dee Carlson's educational background includes a Fine Art degree from the University of Oregon, with an emphasis in portraiture, sculpture and painting. She has been influenced by many ethnic cultures, colors, textures, imagery and art. Over the years, she has explored a variety of artistic media, both as a student and a hobbyist; however, in 1993 she was introduced to the wonderful Japanese glazing process called "raku." It has changed her life. She has since left a corporate life-style to pursue a career as a ceramic sculptor. Her work has received a number of awards and has been exhibited in shows and galleries throughout the Northwest.

Artist’s Statement

"My artwork reflects my appreciation of the power and beauty of nature and the human form, as well as my exploration of color and texture. Raku is most often my mean of artistic expression because I enjoy the unpredictable nature the process offers. Because Raku involves combining nature's elements -- earth, fire, water & air -- each work becomes a unique experience and design, no two pieces can ever result the same. Just as Mother Nature individualizes each of us, she also takes a hand in defining each artwork's unique outcome. My work is comprised of realistic and contemporary imagery; individually handcrafted from clay and combined with low-fire glazes and mixed media to reflect color and texture in design. I've drawn animals and nature from the age of five. Since then, I've learned to "draw in the mud" and let nature glaze the final colors."

Forever a girl at play -- D. Carlson
